I was divorced in 2012 and ordered to pay 1700 per month to my ex for life or until she remarries or one of us dies because we were married for 20 years and in MN that apparently is the qualifier for permanent support according to the Judge. This order was put into place as i was unemployed and salary based off a short term consulting job that paid more than I had ever made during our marriage, Also contributing to that amount was the fact that she chooses to waitress for her job and does not/ did not include all of her tips in what she made. She now has a live in boyfriend and works only part time and has taken months off at a time because she does not need to work what i pay her and his income plus she had an inheritance she lives off the spousal support. I work 2 jobs and maybe a 3rd soon and have our kids living with me full time supporting them as well. The issue here is more than just the large amount of support but the fact it puts her in a position where she does not have to work. She is able to collect this money live with her boyfriend no responsibility to work. This is an unfair outdated law that lets people take advantage of loopholes a and leaves people like me working 70 hours a week to barely make ends meet.
